During the Second World War one of the most dangerous jobs
was to be a rear gunner. It was the rear gunner’s job to defend his aircraft
from any enemy attacking from the rear.
This was so important because the pilot had to fly the plane
and look out for the enemy in front of him but had to trust his rear gunner to
keep the aircraft safe from enemy attack at the rear.
My father knew a real life rear gunner on a Lancaster. He
remembers stories told by him. His name was John Cox a quietly spoken gentleman.
